About Me
Drawing Assessment
For this assessment I drew a portrait of a woman, a hand, and a skull man monster with a companion in graphite. With graphite it's easy to blend and add value to a drawing as well as to layer and erase.
I used value to add dimension to my portrait and hand, making them look more realistic and with soft shading. I also used proportion to make my portrait and hand drawings look realistic instead of cartoony. The ideas behind my drawings were to create realistic drawings and show my creativity and images online inspired me. I showed realism by using texture in the hair of my portrait and blending the shadows in my hand. I showed creativity by making a monster character and I was inspired by Sans from Undertale. I found my portrait the most successful and I learn about my artistic capabilities as well as how to draw better from reference. |
Shapes and Forms - Colored Pencil Fruit - Colored Pencil
Used colored pencil to show value and for my fruit I chose to draw a banana.
Object 3-Way - Watercolor
My piece is a 3-way watercolor painting of a tiger lily. With watercolor it's important to leave white spaces since it doesn't layer like acrylic and it's okay to let the paint flow and be imperfect.
I used color and value to show the tiger lily in different color ways and show the highlights and shadows on the flower. I used variety by show the flower in a variety of colors. The idea behind my pieces was to show an object in different colors as well as to show consistency within my paintings. I was inspired by a reference I found online and my love for tiger lilies. My pieces show this by the paintings looking similar and the values matching on the flowers when painted in different colors. The most successful thing about my pieces is the consistency and my favorite one is the orange one. I learned about consistency within my paintings as well as how to create value with watercolor. |
Watercolor Sketches
Watercolor Landscape
My piece is a watercolor landscape with mountains, and a river with rocks and a tree next to it in a grassland. There's also a setting sun in the background over the mountains. With watercolor it's important to leave white spaces since it doesn't layer like acrylic and it's okay to let the paint flow and be imperfect.
I used color to show value and depth in the grass. I used a dotting technique to show texture in the grass and in the tree and a swirling technique for the mountains to give them a rough look. The river adds movement to my piece because it's curved and tapered and the sun adds emphasis because its bright and stands out against the light background grabbing the viewer's attention. The idea behind my piece was to challenge myself and create a peaceful landscape. I was inspired by the colorful paintings shown in class and the peacefulness of rivers and mountains. I showed this in my piece by doing a river that looks peaceful and has water that was challenging for me to paint. I used layering and a swiping technique to create the ripples in the water. I also used bright colors to make the landscape vibrant and fun. The mountains and the shy are the most successful part of my piece. I learned how to layer and let the paper shine through as well as different ways to create texture. |
Acrylic Practice
Art History Acrylic Painting
My piece is inspired by Edvard Munch's pieces The Scream, Ashes, and Young Woman at the Beach. There is a woman on the beachy shore looking out at the sunrise.
I used color to contrast the waves in the sky and line to add texture and variety to the piece as well as movement and unity. I made the woman the emphasis by using white to contrast against the darker colors. The idea behind my piece was to show a mixture of Edvard Munch's pieces to create my own unique piece. I found that I was successful because you can see elements of Edvard Munch in my piece. I used the sky and colors from The Scream, the women from Ashes, and Young Woman at the Beach. The sky is the thing I'm most proud of in my piece and my attempt at painting water and a human was mostly successful. I learned how to layer acrylic paint and how to blend and mix colors. I also feel more comfortable painting with acrylic because of the overall general I've learned and improved. |
Portrait Practice
Acrylic Portrait
My piece is an acrylic paint portrait of a pangolin, an animal that looks similar to an armadillo. The painting is an up-close of the pangolin, curled up, with part of its tail and claw in the frame.
I used color to give the painting pops of color within the scales, shape for the scales, and form to show dimension in the tail. I used white throughout the painting to balance it out and the brush strokes on the scales to show movement. The idea of my piece was to challenge myself with textures. I thought a pangolin would be a great subject because of the texture within the scales and the different colors within the scales and the tail. I also wanted to different techniques like dry brushing. The colors and the face are the most successful of my piece and I also like how the tail turned out. I learned how to blend with acrylic paint and how to create a variety of textures using different techniques. |
Skin Tones
Oil Paint Practice
Oil Landscape
My piece is a landscape of a lake leading to the mountains in the distance. There're hills on both sides with red, orange, and yellow flowers as well as a sunset in the background.
I used color to make my piece more vibrant and I used value to make the mountains fade into the distance. I used the hills to create balance and the river to emphasize the mountains in the background. I wanted to make a landscape with mountains and a multi-colored sky. I was inspired by the style of video games and the colors they used to make the games look fun and vibrant. I showed this by making the clouds stylistic and making the overall painting have minimal detail and a lot of bright colors. I succeeded in creating a smooth gradient in the sky and painting the water. I also liked how the mountains gradually fade in the background. I learned how to prepare for oil painting and mix colors. I also learned how to create layers with my colors and make smooth blends with oil paint. |
Final Exam
1. My most recent piece was my oil landscape, and I was satisfied with the result. For my process I started by doing practices with oil paint then I got my canvas and sketched the outline of my piece with a pencil. Then I did an underpainting and blocked in my base colors on top. Next, I worked on the sky, then the water. then the hills in the foreground. Finally, I did the mountains and added the final touches. As an artist, this piece represents my simplistic style and my interest in colorful things.
2. My most successful painting was the acrylic portrait and my least successful was the watercolor landscape. For my acrylic portrait, I wanted to challenge myself, so I chose to do a picture of a pangolin that was close up and had a lot of different textures and colors. When I finished the portrait, I was very proud of it, and I learned how to create different textures and colors with acrylic paint using new techniques. For my watercolor landscape, I didn't like the way it turned and while I was painting it, I was frustrated. I learned how to use watercolor better than I did before by layering and creating texture.
(I'll add watercolor final Monday. The picture disappeared.)
3. My strengths as an artist are my imagination and my blending. My imagination impacts me by allowing me to create unique and interesting paintings and my blending allows me to create smooth gradients and transitions into different colors. My weaknesses as an artist are realism and watercolor. Realism impacts me because it's seen as a foundation for all artists but it's not something I'm good at or like doing. Watercolor impacts me because it's a medium that I admire, and after trying it out I found it hard to do
4. My goals as an artist for the future are to get better at digital art since I want to have a career in graphic design. I also want to work with clay since I haven't in a while, and I want to improve my drawing skills. Lastly, I want to get better at designing and brainstorming ideas. I recently got Adobe CC and I'm taking college classes to learn the first steps of being a graphic designer. In my free time, I plan to practice drawing and brainstorming ideas. Lastly, I will take art classes in college so I can work with clay again.
